The Mercedes-Benz R129 SL, produced from 1989 to 2002, is one of the most mechanically robust roadsters ever built. While engines remain sound, the interiors of cars approaching their fourth decade tell a different story.
Interior Parts That Fail First
Centre Console and Cup Holder. The console cracks at the gear selector surround and lid hinges. The cup holder jams on post-1995 cars. OEM: A1296800550 (console lid), A1296840371 (cup holder).
Dashboard Top Pad. The padded vinyl skin develops craze-cracking. OEM: A1296801287 (non-airbag), A1296804487 (airbag variant).
Soft Top Well Cover. The trim concealing the soft top mechanism degrades at corner clips. OEM: A1297700175.
Roll Bar Finisher Trim. Consistently cracked on high-age cars. OEM: A1297270070 (left), A1297270170 (right).
Door Pocket Liners. The lower insert cracks under load. OEM: A1297270350.
Why Parts Were Discontinued
The R129 was replaced in 2001. Under Mercedes' ten-year policy, supply was wound down by 2011–2012. The available interior trim catalogue has contracted sharply since.
