A classic Mercedes-Benz and a modern electric car sit side by side, contrasting timeless design with futuristic minimalism under a dramatic sky.

Classic Cars vs. Electric Vehicles | Why Classics Still Win

Electric vehicles get a lot of attention right now. Range is improving, charging infrastructure is expanding, and manufacturers are investing heavily. But for a significant number of drivers, none of that changes their relationship with their classic car.

Here's why classics hold their ground.

Design that doesn't age out

A 1970s Mercedes W123, a Jaguar E-Type, or a classic BMW 2002 looks exactly as good today as it did when it was built. The proportions, the details, the craftsmanship in the bodywork — these are cars that were designed by people who cared about how they looked, not just how they performed on a spec sheet.

Modern EVs are designed by software. Many of them will look dated in a decade. A well-kept W123 won't.

You can fix a classic yourself

Open the bonnet of a modern electric vehicle and there isn't much to see. The engineering is largely inaccessible without specialist diagnostic equipment and manufacturer access. Classics are the opposite — a competent mechanic can diagnose, repair, and rebuild most systems with hand tools.

That repairability is part of the appeal. When something goes wrong, you understand what went wrong and you can fix it. That's not nostalgia. It's practicality.

The parts situation

One objection often raised is that classic car parts are hard to find. For some vehicles, that's true. But the specialist aftermarket — companies like AutoClassicX that manufacture discontinued components to original specifications — means the parts problem is more solvable than it used to be.

Modern EVs, by contrast, are dependent on manufacturers for proprietary components. When those manufacturers stop supporting a model, the car becomes effectively unrepairable.

Value

Well-maintained classic cars hold and often increase in value. The best examples of desirable models have appreciated significantly over the past twenty years. An EV bought today is a depreciating asset, largely dependent on battery condition for its resale value.

That's not an argument against EVs for everyday transport. But it's a real consideration if you're deciding where to put money into a vehicle.

If you're keeping a classic running and need parts that aren't available elsewhere, ask us. That's what we're here for.
